We finally got around to getting a couple of these interfaces, one from Amazon and a random one off eBay. Both were less than $5 and we've tested them both out with the FCB1010. Our units from two completely different sources are identical inside.

While we wouldn't advise using these for any "busy" MIDI streams (they do have a fair bit of latency so for high traffic streams you could lose some data), BUT for simple MIDI like an FCB1010 they'd work just fine.

The advantage of course is that they work perfect with SYSEX so even if they served no other purpose, for programming where you need full SYSEX support they work perfectly. There are no drivers required either, you just plug them in they work with Leopard, Snow Leopard, and Lion. They show up as "USB MIDI CABLE" on the Mac.

You couldn't buy the cables, ends and make it for what these cost. I have no idea how they make any profit at all...

There are some new "versions" are appearing on eBay and Amazon is not updating the PIX to reflect any changes of the old interface they were selling (via a 3rd party vendor) so...these are the ones you DO NOT WANT!

Avoid them like the plague, they will not work with SYSEX at all.

JUst received another MIDI interface and tested it out. It will send and receive SYSEX from the FCB1010 perfectly, but it will FAIL the loopback test via the FCB1010 in MERGE mode.

The interface is this one:

"THIS LINK HAS BEEN REMOVED BY THE ADMIN" - reason is it's NOT SYSEX capable and the seller refuses to support it.

Tested with Mac Pro, OS X 10.7.3

*** ALERT ***

It appears now that the previous link for the $5 specials is still using the old PHYSICAL package BUT the makers have changed the insides...

If you run Apples Audio MIDI Setup, you'll see any MIDI interfaces you have (or had) connected in the MIDI panel:

On the right hand side is the "NEW" interface, labeled USB2.0 and shows TWO ports going out, only ONE coming in. I can no way get this thing to send anything on either port. It will receive fine, but not send. Thus, it's a piece of junk.

When I contacted the eBay seller, they said it was not SYSEX capable and their listing showed that. Which it didn't. Surprise... ;)

If you can get your money back from Amazon, eBay or where ever you got it, do it.
